Has anyone re-chromed the vent windows and bumpers for a '66 stang? How much did it cost you? Or, would it be best to just buy them new, although they're rather pricey...

chrome

I had the vent windows and bumpers rechromed for my 65. If I recall the vent frames cost $45 ea. and the bumpers were $140 ea. I would not call the result "show quality" but it's better than the repro stuff.

If your talking about the die cast vent window frames, expect to pay a good plater ~ 150 each. A lot of hand work is required. Many times the plater will completely grind away the recessed areas. Die cast is difficult to plate, depending on the condiditon, pits require multiple copper plating and polishing. Bumpers tend to run about 150 for really good plating.

...so it's going to be cheaper to just buy repro's I guess - this isn't a show car.

thanks!

New die cast parts are usually not real cheap, they will start to corrode under the plating pretty fast

bumpers

I've seen the cheap repro bumpers begin to rust in about 1 year. I think its worth it to spend a little more upfront than have to redo it later. You will never regret spending a little more but you will regret spending too little.

right on, thanks!

How would you go about finding a place that does this kind of work? Just call around to local hot rod shops?

I've just had my '65 bumpers and overriders done here in Aus. They needed panel beating as well, but the result is excellent. Try looking up metal polishers in your local phone book.
