re-clearcoating my fanblades after painting them

Hello All,

Well I'm prepared for the deluge of criticism, but I've got a question for you.

I sanded and spray painted my fanblades. I didn't like the fanblades and just wanted a set of wheels to use at the track [road courses not drag racing]. It worked just fine.

Now I'm trying to sell the car and the wheels are one of the things standing in the way.

Anybody know if I can just remove the spray paint with [fill in the blank with your favorite paint remover] and re-clearcoat the wheels? I did not sand very deeply and am hoping I only 'scuffed' the original clearcoat, so a new clear coat might do the trick, yes?! no?!

I have done the exact same thing before. It took some "Mineral Spirits", and ALOT of elbow grease to remove the paint/primer ( I did both to mine). After I removed the paint/primer, I shot a little clear on the wheel to see if the "scuffs" would show through and indeed they did. I then "wet sanded" the wheel (probably not the best thing, but it worked), and applied two or three coats of clear via a spray gun. The end result was about 85-90% good as new. The only way one could tell that there was something awry was to match them up against another Saleen rim. Hope this helps.

IMO, the painted fan blade looks better than the stock one. Good luck man!

Definatly looks better than stock!
Have a look around for a polish that remove's Pit's from chrome and aluminum. I don't know if it will return to a good finish alone, so maybe pickup some super fine polish and use a buffing wheel.

If you are only doing this to sell the car, how about this idea.

Find a set of takeoff 17" bullitts (cost $300 range around here) and put those wheels for sale - I bet they would bring more than what you pay for bullitts. Craigslist is a good tool to sell and buy wheels, locally.

As to buying some 'stockers', I hear you. I haven't found anything as cheap as you've mentioned...Maybe I should look in Detroit! The biggest issue is the God D@mned TPS bands on these wheels. I would really prefer to do a 'simple swap', ie: take mine off, put new on, and go! No taking this tire and that tire off and swap the TPS bands and mounting tires back on and blah blah blah. I've spent THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS on this car and want it GONE.

That said, I will probably have to take the tires of to 'reclear' the wheels anyways, so that goes against my plan, but is cheaper than buying 'new' stockers/selling old.

And fwiw, Carmax is the only one so far that cares that they are painted...farging bastiches wanna give me 18 grand for this car that just over a year ago cost me well over 30 grand...ARG!

Blah blah 'woe is me' blah...

Thanks again and if you have any more ideas or a definite example of some 'stockers' WITH TPMS bands feel free to share. I will keep my eyes open for them on the forums/craigslist/ebay/etc. as well.

ps: I much prefer the black as well! Easier to take care of, looks better, and matches my flat black badges.

If you go for '06 wheels you will need the tpms straps since there will be no provision in the wheel for your sensors. You can buy aftermarket worm clamp type ones from American Muscle, about $65-70 for a set of 4.

Thanks for the info. It's helpful as I forgot which year they started 'mandating' the TPMS systems for the helpless retards that can't keep track of their tire pressures . So, for $75 + $xxx I'd be able to get some more stockers in the unfortunate event I'd have to give in to that bastion of Satan: Carmax.

[Actually they're not that bad. I'm just a grumpy sot.]

I'd rather have my black Saleens back...but they were hefty 20 inchers:

There is no "provision" for the sensors on the wheels. The sensors are stuck on with 3M tape and the band clamp holds it in place. You can install the TPMS sensors on any wheel probably ever made.

uh... isn't that what I said?

Might not have been clear to all but I meant there was no OEM bands in those wheels since they were '06. That was the "provision" I was talking about. I upgraded to '07 polished bullits and they did have the straps in them.
