Re-paint aftermarket hood

I purchased a polyurithane aftermarket hood for my car. The hood is the cobra R hood (2001 model). I made the mistake at the time and let my friend paint the hood (he said he was good), now the clear coat is peeling off. I went to the body shop around my house and asked for a price quote, only to find that they couldn't do it.

What? Can't be painted? That's what I was told.

He said that they recently tried to do the exact thing a few weeks ago and ran themselves into a problem. He said that when the hood was stripped of the old paint, the basically needed to start over with the priming process. 6-7 coats of primer, then paint and clear coat. He said that the process would take at least 2 weeks and would cost more than it would to just buy a new pre-primed hood.

Many painters out there? Does this sound right?

i bought my hood used and it was black..the prepped it and repainted it for 350$ canadian without any issues!

go to a better shop

I went to the best body shop in my area, so I assumed that they would know best.

Was your hood metal? From what I've been told, it makes a big difference.

All bumper covers and so on are many differnt types of plastic now, so there should be a problem with getting it done somewhere. It sounds like your friend figured out how to prep it, if the color stuck. Sounds like he just didnt mix the clear right if thats all thats peeling.

if you feel like making a trip to grand bay al i'll fix it for you and warranty it. the shop told you all of that b/c they dont want to deal with it, plain and simple. i have worked at, and managed, quite a few body shops. they all want the easy money from collision repair paid by insurance companies. no one wants to deal with the bs stuff when they dont have too. pm me for a price if ur interested. can provide pics of my work. i now work from home, starting my own business. if you use cheap clear thats what happens to it. after a few years in the sun it starts to lift from the base.

nah man, my hood is a fiberglass steeda 2.5 inch cowl!

Great info guys, thanks a lot. ceracer33, thanks for the offer, but it's my daily driver for the next few months, so I can't go without it for that long.

I'm going to check around at some different shops and see what others tell me.

I would have to say it sounds like a load of crap. It cant be That hard to reprime a freakin hood. Bring it somewhere else...

I'm going to pass by another shop this afternoon and see what they say. I've made a few phone calls today and seems like everywhere I call say it's not a problem, but no quotes over the phone.
