Read This if You Have a Vortech Tensioner Piece!

My Vortech S/C has been out to Vortech for a month now. They just finished redoing practically all the internal parts, except the gears....Bearing case etc.

The bill is $600+ plus shipping both ways.

Main reason Jamie (tech mngr) said that those things go bad is too much tension on the pulley, very likely caused by manually over tightening.

I use to tighten down on it pretty hard.. He said it should have 1/4" to 1/2" slack.. Just thought I'd pass that on to save someone else here a large repair bill, plus over a month of downtime.

Well how tight is tight? Really now way to tell. I used to get crazy slippage and belt dust, now with the tensioner not so much. Maybe its too tight, i dunno.

BTW, the 27th were going down to towers, its official.

Like I said above....1/4-1/2" slack. I used to make it so you could "pluck" the belt and have a little musical sound....I did this b/c the belt would flop around at idle until it heated up. Since Vortech is sending me a new pulley tenioner plate with NEW SQUARE adj. holes, I may not need that piece for awhile.

Rob how long have you had the blower before it needed a rebuild? Im sure mine wont need one for awhile its still got 2 yrs on the warranty anyway.

Travis, I had it 6 mos before it got installed....It's been on 2 yrs, with mild abuse (like you know I dont go to the track )

It was prolly about 2 years old when I got it.

If you are still under warranty, I wouldnt worry.

1/4- 1/2 of slack is in the part of the belt between the Vortech pulley and the Crank pulley? Like underside(not the tensioner side)?

with that much slack how do you not slip???
if i have any slack on mine i never see above 4-5 psi due to slippage....

F u c k that...keep it tight as u can get it. You will not make boost/have belt dust all over your bay.

Yeah, and you can spend $700 for Vortech to redo your bearings

Ill be honest guys, I have NEVER had a problem seeing boost even when the belt was slightly loose...I just had some belt flopping noise where the belt vibrates near the crank pulley part of the belt.

Kevin.. yes, you measure the slack on the part of the belt that feeds FROM the Vortech tensioner TO the crank.

mine willnot make more than 10lbs unless it is tight and i mean tight i have left it loose for a while but its time to tighten it up and go run some real numbers

that and just think of teh sideways strees you are putting on the crank

premature bearing failure ,man. i say tighten until it doesnt slip, or where you can live with the slip

On my buddies S-Trimmed 95, we have to really jam on that belt to get it to stop slipping. Although it was colder out when it was slipping.

Does anyone make an aftermarket tensioner for these cars?

I actually make these, there made out of billet aluminum.
