I just drove my car up the street about a block, when I let off the throttle to slow for the stop sign all of a sudden this incredibly loud deep wirring noise started coming out of the rear/passenger side wheel area. It sounds almost exactly like when you run over a coke-can with a bicycle tire and it grinds against the tire.

The noise is directly related to speed and in gear or not does not make a difference. It sounds like its based between the rear/passenger wheel and differential. It can be heard (altho slower and quieter) at just 2 or 3 mph when I was coming up my driveway.

I jacked the car up and looked around as best I could, its dark and all I have now is a scissor jack but I didnt see anything tangled around the driveshaft or wheel, the axles are dry and show no sign of fluid leak. I tried turning the wheel and it didnt have any abnormal slack or noises coming from it in the small amount it does move.

Could a rock have gotten lodged between the brake rotor and pad? Does it only do it with brakes engaged? Does the noise increase and decrease with changes in speed?

Jack the whole rear, take the car out of gear and turn the wheel to see if you can locate the noise. If it came on all of the sudden I probably picked up something off of the road like Kilgore said.
