Rear axle question

I have made the decision about swapping out the axle on my 01 and putting in a live axle. I have a possible donor axle which is on a 98 Cobra. However there are a few questions I have. What type of axles were on the 96-98's? Weren't they IRS as well. And also would it be able to fit on my car or would it be too short? Thanks for the help.

Only the 99+ Cobras had the IRS rear. Everything before were live axle. But I'm not quite sure if the 96-98 will fit or not.

Why go live axle though? Unless your planning on drag racing...? Just asking.

That's exactly my intention. I'm building it up for drag racing and I really don't feel like snapping any half shafts launching at 5000 rpms. :D

The 94-98 axle will bolt in, but it's 1.5" shorter than the 99-up Cobra or GT. I swapped the rear out of my 96 Cobra with a guy who has a 01 Cobra. It was pretty easy. A 99-up GT rear would work better for you, though.
Ditto...your wheels would look way sunken in in the back if you went with a 96-98 axle...you'd need wheel spacers to bring it back out to where they need to be...I'd look for someone with a 99+ GT to swap with instead...

i agree with missouri guy... i used a 00 gt and looks like from the factory and i love it... especially and 4-5 k launches and not having to worry about a snap.... well accept axles... :rlaugh: go with the 99+ gt rear end you won't regret it :nice:

Where could I find one and how much would one cost? I don't know anybody that has a 99+ GT.

Ask around over on the Modular forums for guys with 99+ GT's that want to swap with you...or go over to the Corral and go into their SOHC forum, there's usually pretty many guys looking for IRS...
