Hey guys I have a 95 GT I want to put rear coil overs on. I run a kyb shock now what coil over kit would work with this shock? And what spring rate I would perfer to stay as close to stock as possible.
Yea bilstein and koni shocks are the only ones you can run. Most other shocks arent strong enough for rear coil overs. I run Tokico Illuminas and I can't do a rear coil over with them.
May I ask why you wanna do a rear coil over? Theres not a huge benifit to it. Except the fact that you can change spring rates with ride height. There arent really any dynamic benifits to it like there is in the front. If you want to change rear ride height, you can get lower arms with adjustable spring perches....thats what I did.
The car is only used for drag racing. Coil overs will allow use adjustability at the track and it will remove the spring off of the control arm. So I would not be able to run a coil over shock with a lakewood 50/50 shock?
Ok I see...SO YOU ARE needing to fiddle with spring rates. I'm not a drag racing guy so I wouldent really know. I would say listen to troy...and/or try calling qa1 as they may be able to set you up with something, if you dont mind switching from a lakewood shock that is.
The springs are not going to determine the amount of "squat". The geometery set in the upper and lower control arms determine the amount of Antisquat and where your Instant Center is. The shocks will play a huge part in how much the rear of the car moves up and down. I have AFCO springs, stock style, and they are pretty awesome...225lb rate. I did spend some big coin on my AFCO double adjustable rear shocks. Being able to adjust the compression and extenstion independentable makes a huge difference. Take away some extenstion and the car will squat a little more but you don't want too much. I have mine pretty neutal right now, the extenstion is on 4 and my compression is on 3. I am going to the track tomorrow night and going to try some new settings that I came up with but I am leaving my control arms alone.
One thing that is nice about rear coilovers is the ability to lower and raise the car immediately. Doing this you can adjust your IS location and your AS figure just with a few turns. And that will also help you if you decide to get the car scaled.
I can't answer that, stock style springs or coilover springs work great. How good they work depends on the user. As for what shock to run.....how much money do you want to spend on a set of shocks? $150? $750?
