Rear End Alignment?

guerro - as you can see by the last paragraph, I'm out on the limb with you. I just wanted us to both have a safety wire on before we climbed out there...

Its a 90 LX 5.0...The tires wore drastically on the inside and outside edges of both...I check tire pressure and it seemed find...they were el cheapo rear tires...maybe it was just the tire..i'll replace and see what happens

including the wear on the inside of the tire (as well as outside) was kinda' need to know information.

Yeah - we got some added info in that last post - guerro - see what happens when we ask?

On a straight axle - wear in the middle of the tire usually=over inflation
Wear on the inside and outside = underinflation

All four of my tires have wear on the outside edge. I have 24.5K on them, and inflated them to 30PSI on my 2003 Mustang GT. I was told by a shop that there's too much wear and they cannot be aligned without being replaced.

Also, they did recommend I add more tire pressure than recommended if I continue to get the same type of wear.

Any ideas?

Is it a live axle in the rear or IRS? (I don't follow the newer ones enough to know - I'm guessing the Cobra's are IRS and the standard GT is a live axle).

Can't think of any reason that the outside edges of both rear tires would be worn with a live axle. If the axle were 'cocked' (like from an accident or something) it could wear the inside of one and outside of the other or cup them. And you would notice it trying to 'steer' you. Do you rotate the tires regularly? If so, the wear is likely occurring when the tires are on the front. Since it's a newer car and everything's probably in good working order, it sounds like the car's got some positive camber in the front end alignment. I'd try another shop before I jumped in line and bought new tires - although 24,000 miles for a set isn't bad if you do a lot of in-town driving.

With the new shocks and springs, have you been driving the car through turns harder? Maybe it's your driving style causing the wear? Taking hard turns at 60-70MPH can easily wear the outer edges of your tires

Good point 5L5 - I just assumed he hadn't been autocrossing or road-racing the car. That kind of abuse will definitely take out the outside edges; it's a bit tougher to do with aggressive street driving - especially if the tires have lasted 24k miles.

I frequently take turns quite hard. Further, there's a couple of fun spots on a highway I travel with a 270% off ramp. Sometimes, I'll take those very fast.

I'm thinking about having the tires flipped on each of the wheels, then have the wheels swapped. It's a novice's idea that may not be feasible, but I'll ask the shop when I stop in. Likely, I'm going to keep these tires another few K at least.

I was in a wreck/got rear-ended, but the left was mostly affected. I'd be very surpised, based on the impact angle, if both left an right were affected on the outer edge.

Still I'm concerned if that wreck had any impact on alignment and may cause tire wear in the future, especially if I'm going to buy $159 tires.

On the other hand, there's been no unusual wear on the left side, since August 1(wreck day), or about 6K, so I will likely not even get an alignment unless severe unusual tire wear occurs quickly.

I've decided to take it to a top mechanic for assessment of the cause. It has had 25K on the set of tires. I think the outer edges slowly wore on both sides. A wreck would not cause equal wear on the outside edges of all tires. Further, I've been told that underinflation will not cause wear on one side, but both sides.

In any case, a mechanic can look at it and assess it. i've been told it shouldn't wear that way no matter what. Something's wrong.
