I saw this in a thread on the 2005+ forums talking about the rear gas tanks, this is a direct quote:

"When the SN95 Verts get hit hard enough, not only do they burst into flames, but the doors get jammed shut and you cannot escape."

Is there any truth to this, since I drive an SN95 vert this obviously got me curious/a little concerned. Opinions?

if you get hit that hard, I'm sure the door glass would break, and you could get out the window or open up the top.

As for the explosion, almost every car on the road has the tank under the trunk. Unless you have some lit firecrackers in the fuel filler like those chevy trucks come standard with, I don't think you are in more danger than any other car.

As corny as this sounds, I have always carried on of those "life saving devices" with me in all my cars. It is a little hammer like thing with a point on it that breaks glass when you hit it. I don't know what it is really called. My drivers ed teacher got most of us carrying one after he brought in a whole bunch of people that had horror stories about relatives getting locked in their car somehow and getting killed either by accident or fire or whatever. For 8 bucks, it can potentially save your life. Corny I know, but I'd rather be living than dead.

To answer your question, no I don't see any merit in this. I don't think it is true because if this was such a prevalent problem, the Department of Safety, department of transportation and the ASE would have taken an investigation into this, and a recall would be enacted. Sure it may have happened to someone, but I think ANY car's doors won't open if it is hit hard enough and at the right angle.

Yes, it's true. And yes, people have died in such wrecks. And yes, it doesn't take a severe rear end collision to jam the doors. As Joes95GT said, it's not a bad idea to carry a Life Hammer in the car. I do. A spring-loaded center punch also works against windows.

there is a class action lawsuit agianst for for this vert problem...but if you have sub frames, or a roll cage you will never have a problem...a few people have died because of this but even if the doors had open in those cases the people would still probly be dead.
