rear end issue

ok, so the deal is, my pinion seal has been leaking for a while. and i was finally able to get it fixed, (i dont trust myself with this job) so, i take it to the shop and they tell me a hundred bucks. but they had to warn me that it seemed like there was alot of play in the pinion and the bearings. like whoever put them in didnt crush them down correctly.and if they put the new seal in they would have to re-crush the bearings? but they told me doing the job could actually be doing more hurt on the car then good. because if they crushed them again and they are completely bad, it would start to be real noisy. well i havent picked the car up yet, but they called me to let me know the outcome... they said there were some metal shaving in the rear and it has in fact gotten a little noisier. i trust these guys and think they do really good work, so i dont think they are trying to sell me off on another job, but before they started working on the car they said who knows how long these bearing will last, but a job like that is around 1200 bucks? does this sound right?
now i called a junkyard and priced a rear, they said 190 something for a complete 4 cyl. rear with 8.8 ring gearing. is this what i need will this work for me? by the way, i have a 89 lx 5.0 and 3.55's

any help would be great

For 1,200 bucks you can go out and buy an Auburn, and an install kit and do it yourself. All you would need is someone or a machine shop to press off your gear and then press it on to the Auburn, then have them press the new bearings onto the Auburn and reinstall it. I did this at a friends dads shop, with not lift. Did it on the ground with some basic tools. Air tools would help.

so now i have a friend that is willing to sell me his 4 cyl. rear for 100 bucks. but i think it has the 7.5 carrier. would it be possible to take my carrier and gears and axles and all, and put it into his rear? because his has a good seal and bearings...

No. You can not use a 7.5 inch rear for your 8.8 inch gears.

ask your mechanic how much he would charge labor,just labor to install gears and traction lok rebuild and you can buy ring & pinion,traction lok rebuild kit and master bearing kit off e-bay for about $200... repost labor charge and we will go from there...

ok, are the pinion seals are pressed into the rear ?if his rear is an 8.8 from a 4cyl. auto, can i put my carrier/gears into it and it fix my problem?

Don't quote me but, I thought all 4cyl. cars had 7.5 carriers. I know my 85 did. They sell rebuild and install kits pretty cheap. I got mine from summit for around 150.00 with handling and shipping. It's not that hard to do, maybe if you know the shop guys well you could ask one of them to help you or do it on the side for some cash and beer. Always works for me!

That's pretty damn high! For $1200 you can get a new 8.8 rear end with 3.73s and new axles. Less than $1000 if you reuse your old axles.

A guy in my town at a local mustang place told me that he would redo my whole rear end from stratch for $750 that is including 3:73s bearings and redoing my posi too. He told me that he was going to rip the whole rearend apart and just build it up from nothing. Sounded like a good deal to me so im probably getting it done towards the end of the summer when i get more money.

I just had 31 spline axles, Auburn Pro locker, new bearings/seals and 3.73 gears installed for $635

That included the price of the axles, bearings and seals. I bought the gears/locker separately.

yea, i keep hearing about how high of a price that is, i havent done anything yet, but i need to get hot. im taking leave in a couple of weeks and need to make sure i can make it 900 miles to maryland. haha but yeah, about the 4 cyl rear. i dont know if they are all 7.5's the junk yard i called for a price.... ive been there a few times. its seems any of the cars they have that are nice or a sports car style, are the cheapest ones. meaning they are all 4 cyls or 6 cyls. (no offense to any one when i say the cheaper or anything. the are some awesome svo's and 6 cyls out there.) the only 8 cyls i have seen are the suv's. but anyways, when i called and told the guy what i was looking for, he was typing it in to the comp and asked me if i had the 7.5 or 8.8. and sayed he had a few in the yard that would work. so i dont know if there were 8.8's in 4 cyls or not. im just going off of that. if i go out there, theres probably gonna be alot of diff covers laying on the ground!!

easy way to tell if its an 8.8 is from the tag on the diff cover.

If it has 88 on it, its an 8.8

Im guessing a 7.5 would have a 75 in there somewhere.

Where it says 2L73 that means its a 2.73 gear and the L means its Limited slip.

if you talk to some of the guys at the track or some local garages,buisnesses that own racecars dirt track or dragstrip they will tell you who's the best rear end rebuilder in town at the best price.i have a guy in town that will install gears for $300 labor thats gears, traction lok rebuild plus axle bearings and seals and you can do as i did and buy everything off e-bay for about $200-$300 thats a good price for a complete rear end rebuild.$600

Junkyard sounds best, just make sure you get an 8.8
