Ive been driving my 1998 GT for about a month now, and i have a horrible noise coming from what I think is my rear axle. Its a quiet, inconsistent grinding noise. I recently replaced the rear brake pads and while the calipers were off i spun the axles, but there wasn't any noise, so i didint think it was the bearings....but I could be wrong. The car is completely stock, 5 spd, and has 80k on the clock. Help please!

I don't have a grinding in mine. I have a bit of a whine though. I check the fluid last time I had the car on a lift and it all seemed him to me. So I don't know.

When does it do it? I had a grinding problem in my 2001 after taking long highway trips and then turning. The bearing in the end of my axles were trashed. Luckily, the warranty covered it. I was told from Ford that some Mustangs come from the factory w/ not enough fluid in the rearends. But, if I remember correctly, it only did it when turning.

It sounds like its your rear diff bearings, my friends went out on him at 49,000 miles.
