My car has developed a whining noise from the rear end and I took it to the shop to have them see what was wrong and they said that the rear end will have to be overhauled. I'm guessing that that means it has to be completely rebuilt. Anywho, my question is this: can I buy a rear end for cheaper and have someone I know put it in? Also...this is a 98 GT convertible, so will a 99-04 rear end work for it? Thanks.

P.S. They said the whining was from a bearing since it is coming from the front and the back...?

How far are you going into your car:shrug: ? You may want to consider a set of gears 4:10's would be nice, and a set of spline axles and a locker. Thats the route Im takeing.:D
I drive 180 miles round trip just about every weekend. I am taking it to my parents and coming back, which is about a 300 mile round trip. I am about to go to a few shops and see what they quote it.

i just got my 4.10s installed a week ago. they are the balls around town, but so far ive made about 3 trips on I-40 and there is a difference. i cant tell you what my speed/rpm's are bc im still waiting for my tuner to arrive so i can correct the speedo. if highway driving really is a concern, get those 3.73s, or 3.90s would be the lowest ratio i would go.
