rear end: whine whine whine

I got my new "MAE Racing" center section and installed it in early fall. I followed all directions, broke it in and did the series of break-in drives. After all the break in procedures, I began driving normal, but winter came fast, as did an electrical problem which kept the car in the garage for a long time. Well I been driving it a good bit lately and I've noticed a noise coming from the rear. Its like a periodical whine about 1 sec apart. changes with different speeds. Its not always noticable, but especially at higher speeds it gets very noise and you can feel the car vibrating with it. Is this normal for these gears/this rear? The oil level is good and its not leaking.

You're just gonna have to yank it and take a look at it. 12sec67 had his professionally done and after a little bit it started to whine , too. He pulled it and the jackass didn't tighten the caps enough and the ring was walking. STOP driving it. It may be salvagable.

That does sound like a resonant vibration, as the diff spins a full rotation in well under a second, especially at high speed. Driveshaft sounds reasonable, and I agree with all above, stop driving and check it or get it checked.

You all must remember that some gears whine more then others. First, low gears like 4.11's will whined more the lets say 3.55's because they are turning more at any given speed then the 3.55's. Seconded, if the gears are made to flex more (like Richmond gears), then this will also cause more gear noise. Finally, how the gears are set will affect noise as well. If you set the gear to ride more towards the top land (high tooth contact) then you will have less noise because more oil can get between the gear teeth (however, you will also have less gear strength). Now, if the gears were set to ride more towards the root, then you'll have more gear whine cause less oil can get between the teeth (however, you'll have more gear strength). The only reason I would worry is that it never made any gear noise before. Did you happen to change your gear oil after 500 miles??? If you did, how did you do it???
