When in nutural and coasting down a hill, them 4.10s really whine. I was told that it is ok, but not going to hurt anything.
I also hear that there shouldnt be any whining at all.. Iam guessing that it could be the install job? Should i even take a 2nd thought about it or could it be adjusted to make it stop...

They really shouldn't whine too much.

If it's really loud then the chances are the install was not done quite right i.e. wrong shim spacing but you could try adding some friction modifier.

i was in the same boat, iwas told by my mechanic that its normal with 4.10s. i did some researching and found out that was WRONG. i took it all apart myself and found they short cut the job by useing the old crush collar, and they charged me for it. i was pissed it took me two hours and the job was done. and all is good no wining either. so take it back and tell em you aint satisfied.

The gear wine just means they were either not put in properly, or broken in properly (or both). Yea its annoying but it shouldent hurt anything in the rear. If u can deal with the sound i wouldent worry about it, and if the sound really drives u crazy its a diff story lol.

well the guy that installed them, lives in OR. (about 250miles away) and he did it in his own garage. Its not THAT bad but i want my car not to be some pieced together POS thats loud and noisey and makes "Weird" noises as said by my girlfriend lol..

ok plus it does get on my nurves, cuz she always says "Well, its a mustang"!!

Thanks for the input guys. I'll check the level and maybe add some friction stuff in there to see if it help, but iam guessing not. I did already add some about 7-8 months ago and its always made this noise.

the most common cause of whining is incorrect pinion depth. i would take off the rear cover and, using lead marking paint, check the wear pattern. a very educated guess would be that they probably should have added another shim under the pinion. you want the pattern to be even down the teeth of the ring gear without running off the edge or being too close to the ring gear base. of course, all this assuming your backlash is between .008 - .012 and your diff is fine. and if you have put any real miles on it your probably stuck with the whine anyway.
