Rear Gear Break In Period?

My 03 Centennial GT is currently in the shop for rear gear swap to 3:73 gears. Is there a recommended break in period? The mechanic mentioned there is a slight humming noise upon accelleration but that it should subside over time when the "break-in period" is over. Comments welcomed!

I gave mine a good 1000 miles, you will get a mixed opinion on this, some say less to none. Biggest thing with mine was to inspect for leaks, I had a bad pinion seal and it would have caused some problems, but I noticed the leak and fixed it....

Some people beat on it as soon as they leave the driveway. I put about 300 miles on mine before I really got on it. Just follow your installers instructions and that way if they continue to whine, you can take it back and he can't say it's your fault.

The ring and pinion gears should have been lapped together during the manufacturing process. Because the pinion depth or backlash may not be exactly the same give them a couple 100 miles or so. Also did you install a bearing kit or use the old bearings? If new bearings you will want them to get a few miles also.

500 mile break-in period is recommended by Motive.

Sometimes when people say stuff like '30ft', I thought that they were kidding and wanted me to **** up my car.

But quite honestly, I was stupid and didn't know about break-in periods, so I gave it about 100ft and then I drove it normally, pretty high spirited. I haven't had any problems yet, knock on wood.

But JUST to be safe, give it a good 300 to 500 miles.
