i have a 89 gt and as far as i know the rear is stock. i got the car from the original owner and he told me that nothing in the drive line has ever been replaced. i was curious to see what gears i had, but the sticker was off the inside of the door so i got under the car with masking tape and taped the tire and the fender. it took 3 1/4 turns of the drive shaft to get them to line back up. i was told there is no way my car came from the factory with 3.27s, being that mustangs only came with 2.73s and 3.08s those years. the tag on the diff says 3SL27 and hten some other numbers. my Question is what kind of rear do i have? ive never seen another rear with an S in the code. please help. thanks alot

AODs had the option of 3.27s from the factory. That's what mine had in it, but it's a 92. If it was an option in 89, I don't know.

A t-5 can come from the factory with a 2.73 or a 3.08. Most likely your car came out of the plant with a 2.73.

As for your speedometer & Tach: They both become ambitious as the speed of the car increases and your RPM's go up. You need an aftermarket tach if you don't have one and you are planning lots of mods.

If you plan on upgrading and have a 5-speed install 3.73 gears. If its an automatic install 4.10 gears.

In 89 you could order a car with 3.55's if you wanted. They didn't just come with 2.73's and 3.08's. Its possible the car had 3.27's. The only thing that I don't understand is how and why your speedo is so far off. That should be your big concern.

Don't forget that your trap speed at the track is an AVERAGE speed taken during the last 66 feet of your pass. However, you are still a few mph off of what you are running, even with that fact.

Have you decoded your vin so you know that you didn't buy an automatic car that had a T-5 swap done to it?

For all mustang production there were only 3 gears

2.73 = T-5 only
3.08 = AOD or T-5 option
3.27 = AOD option only

I haven't heard or read anywhere that you could order 3.55's from the factory. I don't think that is a true statement, I could be wrong. I would need to see proof.

i dont agree with getting 3.55s from the factory. if i remember correctly car fax said it was a 5 speed. i got it from the original owner and he didnt seem like the kind of guy that would even know where or how to do that. the car was bone stock when i got it. just for fun tho where do i find a vin decoder?

Just go here: GT registry

On the main page there is a pull down menu with quick links. One of them is for Door/VIN tag decoding. It's free and can tell you some information about your car. Hope it helps.

the door tag sticker on my car is missing due to the fact the guy i got it from had it painted. the vin comes up to be a 5.0 gt at least. is there any way i can look at tell. like how the clutch pedal was mounted or anything like that. i do remember the guy telling me at 20k he had a clutch put in it and then after that he took it ez on the car...
