i want to improve the rear suspension of my 67 mustang. Is it worth re-arching the leaf springs or should i just buy new ones. Also how much of a performance handing difference would it be if i install a rear sway bar. i have a 1" sway bar in the front.
+3 on buying new springs. while re arching springs can be cost effective, do so only if you are selling the car, or will drive it less than 50 miles per year or so. remember that you are dealing with 40 year old metal.
+4 on new springs. you can get them with stock height +1" or -1" with as many as 5 leaves. Calvert Racing has a setup of a split mono leaf that works with thier traction bars. a friend of mine has those on his 67 Camaro RS that runs high 8's. He carries the front wheels 100 to 150 feet from the start line with that setup and the right tires.
+4, buy new springs. keep your old ones if you want for originality. adding a rear sway bar will help keep the car more level during cornering. I would first add stiffer springs.
It has been 3 years and my memory isnt that great but I think I used 4.5 leafs and was actually thinking to myself yesterday how much better the car handles. I have had 620#s and the 1" sway bar on the car for years but before the rear spring change the rear wouldnt stay planted like it does now. It will ride rougher though.
thanks for advice. sounds like new ones is the way to go. i currently have 620 coils springs in the front with 1" sway bar.....it feels nice and solid but i need to compliment it with a solid rear end suspension!
