Rear main seal?

Well i finally got my engine in and clutch/flywheel/bellhousing ready to put the tranny in today and there was oil coming out in the rear, so i Took everything off in the back and its the main seal....Bought a new one just wondering how hard is it to do?

It's not that hard. Take a screwdriver and pry out the old one. Now take something like brake clean or it's equiv. and clean the surfaces of the crank and the block housing. Take a very light coating of grease(very light, almost so it's non existant) and coat the inner seal surface that rides against the crank. Next as you start the seal on the crank, rotate it as you push it over the crank. This insures that you don't pinch the lip of the seal or roll it under. Now you have to knock the seal in the housing. Try using a soft face hammer and start by going in a circular motion around the seal. Be very careful not to damage the seal. It has to go in at an even amount a little at a time. Keep workin' it until it is seated all the way down. Good luck

Are you talking about RTV? And where exactly did you put it?

yeah RTV, its been a long day. i put it on the seal itself and everything has stayed sealed. My dad is a mechanic and he told me to use RTV when i chaned it out. was that a mistake?

Oiling the surface as mentioned is cool...helps it go into place...RTV??? i wouldnt, or didn't use it when i did mine....no need to seal around the O.D. or the metal ring...it goes in and fits like a mofo anyway...and you dont even want any on the rubber portion of the seal....

put it this way...its not RTV'd from the factory.....that "green coating" on the seal is there for a reason....

Props to ya, I have never used rtv on a rear main and have never had one come back. I must be doin' somethin' right.

I guess as long as it doesn't leak you ok but I've been in the business for a lot of years and worked w/ alot of techs and can't remember any of then usin' RTV.
