Rear Seat Belts

I've got an 88' hatch that came with just the lap belts. I'd like to put three point belts in there so my son can ride in the car. I read that the three point belts came stock in the 90-93 stangs.

Has anyone put three point belts in a hatch that came with lap belts and/or someone have pictures of how the stock belts were mounted, etc.?

You're gonne have to do some welding to get the upper belt mount points installed. Also, you'd need the 90-93 plastic interior hatch quarters as well as a new pull shade.

Not hard, but if you don't have a welder (or skill with it), it does complicate things. You'll need to locate a parts car and cut the needed brackets out and secure some belts. Prob looking at $300 or so in part sbefore you even start welding

I'm curious as to what place requires a 3-point belt for a passenger to ride...

My 80 coupe only has lap belts.. as long as they came like that stock, I can't see it being illegal.

i did mine on my 87 project it's not hard but you definately want to know what your doing with a welder and cut from a donor car and mount in the right place.

i don't think it is required in my state either as long as it came like that from the factory .i know i will feel alot better with my kids riding in the back with the update .

Not required...but 3 point belts are MUCH safer than lap belts. That's why they were phased out.

if i had kids in my backseat...id do the mod.

As it is right now...i have no seat belts in my rear seat. Hell..the passenger seat is for show too

i had to do the update both my kids will be in the backseat for alot of trips on those nice summer days with the t-tops off.

Thanks for all the replies and pics!!!

My son is four and requires a booster seat. It is recommended to always use three point belts with the booster seat. He doesn't ride in the car now but gets really excited about it, as does my three year old nephew. I'd like to be able to take them out in it. Plus, with the update I will be able to drive the car on days I drop my son at day-care.

I recently purchased some universal belts. I may try to "create" a bracket and ask nicely for my brother to weld it on there.

i picked up a 4 cylinder mustang with clean black interior for 400 bucks and i gutted it and sold it for 400 bucks .the car was cut up and sold for metal and i was able to cut out the section i needed for the brackets and matched them up before i drilled out the spot welds.so basically i got a black interior for free.your best bet is to go to a junkyard and cut out the brackets shouldn't cost you too much. i would rent a battery operated sawzall with a metal blade if you don't already have one.make sure your brother welds this up real good you don't want these breaking prematurely if you go this route.be safe good luck

Picking up the brackets from the junk yard tomorrow. what should I expect to pay for the rear trim and belts? Do I have to get the stock belts or will universals work as well? Do the universals need to mount a certain way to work?

I'd get the stock belts personally.

Unsure what to pay since most boneyards vary. If you come out of these spending less than $200 for the belts, buckles and quarters, you did very well.

Also, the rear pull shade is difference between the 90-93 and 87-89 Mustangs, so if you want to use a pull shade, you'll need to get one from the newer car.

Also, what color interior do you have? As shades changed between 87-89 and 90-93. You may need to paint to match.

Finally, the front seat belt upper mount on the B-pillar is lower on the 90-93 vs the 87-89, so you'll have to make a new hole through the plastics to mount the front belts. Not a huge deal, and you'll see what i mean when you mount up the panels. I just used a small drill bit to find center, and then a unibit to enlarge it. Then i used a black grommet to fill the old hole.

I did mine an easier way using the stock 90 rear belts. I drilled holes and installed the belt brackets to the wheel well using thick washers and seat belt bolts. I was not about to attempt welding or anything, plus I did it in my 87 before I swapped to a 90 black interior. I wanted the 3 point belts for my older two kids and did not plan on changing my interior. I cut slits in the stock 87 quarters above the speakers and ran the belts through them. They fit just fine under the stock quarters, but it did take some time to locate them just right so they fit. I have some pics somewhere I'll have to find if anyone is interested. But if you can, updating to the 90-93 setup is the best way to do it since it locates the seat belts higher up and in a better place.
