Rear Steer MII!?

In '99 I did a junkyard MII swap on my '70.
In 2001 I redid it with a Street Rod Engineering Kit.

My car has been wrecked, with no suspension damge, and has also driven the Alcan.

The MII drives great. I won't say if it does, or does not handle ideal, but it seems to be ok. I will say it drives straight, doesn't have bumpsteer, and very little brake dive.

I am now considering another iteration.
If you look at the Heidts Super Ride, or the SRE Ultra Ride you will see that they have MII geometry, but have a spindle setup for rear streer.

Now, if the ball joints, and the suspension arm geometry is the same, all you need is the right rack to have rear steer MII in a classic Mustang.

Why? Because I want my engine down, and back. I estimate I can move the engine down 3" and back 5". I think this is signifigant.

For those considering MII, think about this. I contacted Street Rod Engineering and they agree that it is feasible.

What do you other stangers think?

Are you saying you would have rear steer only or front and rear steering?

Rear steer only of course.
Rear steer as in the rack behind centerline of wheels.

MII suspension is front steer. Classic Mustang is rear.
My '70 has MII right now.

I'm not sure of the engine bay dimensions of the '70, but in my '65 I have the engine 3.75" back from standard and it's hard up on the firewall - and my firewall has been altered to suit the RHD conversion so with a standard firewall you wouldn't even be able to go back that far. Going too low with the engine really screws steering geometry as the rack/drag link needs to be lower to suit, it's all a compromise really.

Having said that, wouldn't you be better with rear sump front steer anyway? Nothing to get in the way no matter how far you went back. (Although rear steer usually gives better Ackerman angles)

Have a look at the RRS Rack, as it places the rack behind the 'drag-link' wich might give you a bit more room to move back.

Umm...
I have already converted to MII. My front subframe is scratch built also. Nothing stock up there.

MII conversions often have less than ideal engine placements. These Ford rear sump pans still have a sump up fron to clear the oil pump. It is the pan needing to occupy space that the rack already has. On mine I can't go lower without moving it forwards.

I am suggesting this for people with MII, or thinking of converting to it.

Wouldn't going rear steer only give you a real squirrelly car? It'd be like doing a reverse donut in a fwd car, and believe me, I've done them. Another thing, those are your drive wheels in the rear, you don't want them slipping any more than they have to.

he's not talking about rear wheel steering. there is a diff between rear steer and rear wheel steering.
