I have an 8" rear that has 3.00 gears open leg. I want to put in 3.90 - 4.11 limited slip. BEsides buying the parts, what else is involved? Do I need to press on bearings at all or can I just screw and unscrew bolts? I don't have access to a press and I would like to do this on my own if possible. I guess I'm asking, "How do you do this?"

Thanks!

If this is for the '68...I would look into purchasing a 67-70 Mustang 9" used/rebuilt with the options mentioned. Generally, modifying an 8" would cost more than a comparable 9" + you get a stronger rear end w/ more aftermarket parts available.

I second that. Cougar rears will also work.

just on a side note is your duration (280) advertised or at 0.050? Also I know what your going through with all the swap stuff. I went from the standard 7 to a 8 but then quickly went to a 9. You'll be able to find a fitable 9 easier than I did and I think anyone with a 351 should probably have one if they stard bolting on performance parts.

But anyway, if you don't want to do all that you pretty much just pull the axels and unbold the center and put in the new center and slide the axels back in. Add fluid and your good to go. If it has been sitting awhile though you'll probably need bearings and they will need to be pressed on or I think you could buy new axels with bearings already on but if I was going to do that I would go with a 9 and 31 spline it with a new center....but thats just me

It depends on whether you are going to replace the complete third member or not. If not you will need a dial indicator with magnetic base, dial calipers, bearing splitter (if reusing old bearings), hyd press, spanner wrench, gear marking compound and pinion gear and housing shims.

I was doing the same thing with my 9". I was going to do the work myself, but labor cost is only about $100 here in Detroit. I had DTS in warren do my rebuild for $125 + parts. It wasn't worth the hassle to do it myself. The tools you need cost more. I was getting quotes of like $400-$500 and thought it was alot, but the gears cost $150-$200 and bearing are $100 , so $425 is not that bad.
