Well I was looking at a possibility of rebuilding the bottomend on my car while I have some downtime in later December. What "needs" to be done to the bottomend to get it rebuilt?

I know it needs to be bored .030 over? Pricing?

Does the crank have to be turned? .010?

I will have it balanced for sure. Pricing?

I don't need the threads chased or tapped do I?

Is their a rebuild kit that I could get (minus the pistons) because I"m going
with aftermarket pistons.

I would (if I decide to go thru with it) reuse the rods and crank.

Of course I would get all new gaskets for everything. The topend is pretty new so I'm not worried about that...

So any thoughts on what "needs" to be done?

I know bore, balance, and assembly and I would need new bearings and all?

Where do I get these?

1200 Seems about right for a general shortblock rebuild...all depends on what you want done...how far you want to go. I would want new lifters as you've got some miles on the mill. Prices will vary depending on things like type of slugs..forged/hyper, rings, and all the $$ that generally sneek up on you when replacing a motor. I find a hidden budget of 500 will usually get you through for things like new balancer, waterpump, etc or anything else that generally SHOULD be replaced when you have everything out.

the pistons we used were TRW replacements....maybe a little lighter :)........we have a engine parts supply here in Mobile, so they actually have cheaper parts, bearings etc than most parts stores. But make sure you figure in labor (if someone else is doing the work), machine shop labor, work etc. The parts will be the cheapest thing. The boring, honeing, installing the new pistons on the rod, vating parts, etc will cost over 1/2 of your price! Then you also have to remember to recondition your rods, either polish your crank, or turn it....either way there are cost involved..........and then dont forget a rear main seal, RTV, head/intake/exhaust manifold/timing chain/waterpump/valvecover/oil pan gaskets!

just figure around $1500 on upward to around $2000 total and you should have every avenue covered!
good luck and remember to take pictures, etc along the way!

Today I ordered an engine re-ring kit that includes rings (moly), main bearings (fed mogul/seal power), rod bearings (fed mogul/seal power), gasket set (fel pro), cam bearings (fed mogul/seal power). The kit started out at $93 and some odd change. I added the cam bearings and upgraded to moly rings and felpro gaskets and totaled up to $147. I ordered stock sizes, but I believe that it is no extra charge for over sizes. www.naparts.com

are you haveing a machine shop press on your pistons, install you cam bearings? Recodition your rods?...Just wondering.........:)

I just had mine done..

here is the bill

$510.00 for

hot tank and cleaning
check big end rods install arp rod bolts
check/ service small end and pistons
replace cam bearing
line hone crank bores for main studs and girdle.
new plugs and bore plugs ..installed
crank micro polished chamfered crank oil passasges
new standard main bearing shells (not installed..

nothing was resembled except piston pressed onto rods./

There is all kinds of stuff that needs redoing /replacing and you don't know the whole story until you tear it down and inspect everything. For example,if the cylinder walls are tapered or out of round you have to bore out the cylinders, get new oversized pistons, the connecting rods probably should be resized etc.Machine shops charge a lot.You will want to do it right.Of course, when you reassemble you will need new gaskets and seals you may not have considered at the start. It adds up fast.A good place to start for parts is Summit's engine rebuild kits.Good quality except for some of the gaskets.

I would figure out who is gonna do your machining for you and talk with them about parts needed and prices. And for a number of things, they simply won't know til they disassemble/mic yours what's required in the new motor. Example - will the crank need to be turned - won't know til they get it out. If you just have normal wear/tear - you probably won't need any crank work like that. Engines that have spun a bearing and damaged a journal are the ones that usually require crank work like that. More than likely, you'll simply need the overbore with honing to final size (they'll need the pistons/rings to do that), the clean up, new freeze plugs, cam bearings and the balance (they'll need pistons, rings, pins, rods, bearings, flywheel and dampener for that). While we can give you general guidance, the person you really need to talk to is the fellow that's gonna be doing the machine work for you.

Thanks for the replies guys, I just try to get ideas in for the future. I appreciate the responses. Sometime next week I might get some rough figures from the shop so I can get an idea. It is basically (if I do it) would be a pretty basic rebuild. Nothing special...just to refreshen the engine up a bit...but I have got to see what I want to spend my money on...
