I trashed my t45 over the weekend doing a 1-2 powershift, and now i'm stuck with deciding to rebuild my t45 or just spend the extra money now and go with the t56. Couple things i want to ask is how much it will cost to due each one. If i did the rebuild i think i could take the transmission out myself and send it to a trans speciallist near me to have it rebuilt. Prolly 1-2 shift fork and sychros. With higher gas prices, I am starting to lean towards the t56 which I have found one for 1200 or so. Does anyone have experience with these swaps and if would recommend me doing the same. Did you gas milage increase much? Able to due it yourself and what is all needed?

i have a 96 GT and just went trough the same thing. i ended up rebuilding the T45 but in the end i should have went with a T56. i would have ended up spending the same amount of money. anyway D&D performance has a kit with a drive shaft and cross member.

Roughly how much did you spend on the rebuild, i think i could do the conversion myself with the help of my dad just take a few nights to do it. There are three pros to gettting the t56, better fuel economy, better resale, better transmission. Con of course is the cost so if it would cost near the same then i will just do the conversion

You must have one hell of a T-45 if you spent 3000.00 on it. How much did you actually spend and who did you have build it?

So I'm just curious...

I would love to have a T56 myself. My questions:

1)The final overdrive is the same, or very close to our 5 speeds, so how do you get better fuel economy out of a T56?

2)Are the gear ratio's that much better in the first 3 gears to make the car that much more fun?

I know one of the perks of the T56 is that it will basically take whatever you throw at it.

I did the rebuild which cost a little more than 1500 at the same time i had a flywheel and clutch done. After that i went through three clutch cables. Maybe I'm just bitter and disappointing in myself that i didn't spend a little extra money on the T56.

I'm goin to take the transmission out of my car and take it to a local shop. They are going to open it up and let me know how much it will be then i'm going to make my decision. But i'm also going to change my clutch also and was thinking of a spec stage one or two clutch

mine has a .50 overdrive ratio

longer 1st gear means it hooks up better. yes it makes it more fun to drive

not really, you need to upgrade the input and output shafts and some internals to hold the real power

That is a lot of bread. I just had a 3650 rebuilt (with full kit) and put in a new clutch while it was down and spent a 1000.00.

I would go with a Centerforce or a McCleod clutch. I haven't heard anything good about a Spec either.
