Recoating Old Headers

Is it possible to remove the ceramic coating from an old pair of headers, and get a good, reliable new coat?

I was told that the first ceramic coating can react with the metal and screw up the adhesion. That is, even if you think you removed the old coating and are down to bare metal, it still won't stick.

I talked with one coating vendor who said no problem, and another who said what I just described above.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I looked into this a while back. It ended up being less expensive to just buy new coated headers. The cost to strip, prep and recoat was more than new. These were shorties by the way.

Tony I see your in Owings Mills, there is a place in Eldersburg, MD called MD Performance Coatings they are in the industrial park off of Klee's Mill and RT26. I have used them in the past to recoat a set of MAC long tubes and they looked and lasted pretty good, I finally had some rust come through at the collector in between the tubes about 5 years later.

www.airborncoatings.com and www.swaintech.com also do a very good job.
