Well since I think I have to pull the motor to fix a leak (whether its rear main or oli pan) I'm kicking around the idea of buying a reman explorer motor. How much would y'all pay for one? I'd even go used maybe, just maybe. How many miles would you buy used and what would you pay?

50-75k mile used block. 200 tops. Why the need to replace yours?
Well since I think I'm gonna have to pay someone to pull it anyway to fix a leak and the motor in it now has an unknown amount of miles and is stock I was thinking an explorer motor w new cam etc would be more bang for the buck. No fun to spend $600 or whatever and end up w the same ole crap

JY explorer with under 100k=4-6hundred around here. Then add cam, springs, etc and you're looking at around 1000$. I don't think that's a bad price. Make 250-275rwhp and should last awhile.

oil pan gasket can be changed without yanking the motor. Wipe that sucker squeaky clean and fire it up. Check for source of leak

I changed the oil pan gasket in my '86 years ago by unbolting it from the mounts and jacking it up as high as it would go; this gave me just enough room to remove the oil pan and fish the old gasket out and the new one in.

Gotta be careful, though. I somehow managed to leave a piece of the old gasket in there and it leaked even worse after that. ;)

if you are doing this in the car you can also drop the steering rack for a little more room. changing the gasket isnt that bad but if you have to replace the oil pump drive shaft thats when things get hairy under the car. best to pull it if thats the case.

I find it easier to just support the motor from above and drop the k member. no different that putting long tubes on a mod motor car. rather a routine process at this point.

I say eff all dat chit and go with the motor for that @A5literMan mentions above for $1000.

It'll be solid and you won't have to screw with for a while. Long enough that you can do the same to the motor you're taking out as time permits.

Always loved having another motor sitting around (one that's complete, and ready to go). :nice:

If I had your deep pockets I would have a spare motor sitting around ready to go too! ;)
