Wow it's been a long time since I posted on this board. Sorry for putting this here but I couldn't find any more specific forum. I have owned several Mustangs in the past (all GTs), 3 fox bodies and one SN95. Well I'm driving down a local highway in my truck and I pass what looks to be a early 80s Capri for sale (you know, the Mercury version of the Mustang). I go back, pull over and take a few pics. It's a 5.0 RS. Needs paint and who knows what else.

How are the Capris of this vintage regarded by Mustang aficionados these days? Would this in general be worth any more than a comparable year GT (which probably isn't much)? I think it would be pretty cool painted all black ;-) One certainly doesn't see them around much anymore. Would it be reagrded as an oddball or a welcome variation at most Mustang meets/shows?

Thanks and keep it safe.

Personally, I would consider it very welcome and quite a nice sight to see! I would even like to see the bubble rear hatch window!

Owner of a 79 Capri here. The last year of the 5.0 Capri was 86 and it was also the first year it had fuel injection. I do know that the Capri's are much rarer than the Mustangs. For instance, the last 2 Fun Ford Weekends I went to in Ennis, TX, I was only one of three Capris in the whole event. I was also the only Capri in the whole 150+ car True Street class last year there. If I were you, I'd definately get it.

Mustang Body parts on them.
If its a Early one 82 is a good year.

I would get it. They get respect from the enthusiasts you would want respect from.

When you deal with the word "rareity" then the words respect and admiration usually follow. 86' was the last year however, I personally wouldn'y mind an 86' because it was the first of and the last year for the beginning of the legend - the 86-92 5.0 HO.

My first car was a '79 Capri, didn't have the bubble hatch so it looked a lot like a stang from the rear. It was nice and clean, and got comments everywhere I went. It wasn't anything special though, just a barebones base model. If it had been a loaded mid '80's RS, I'd still have it. I say get it, they aren't worth more than the Mustangs, been they are rarer, and garner more attention from the folks who are into Foxes. They had a very tough look, retaining more of the '70's musclecar heritage than the stangs did. WildHorse actually managed to massage a Capri nose onto one of his many GTs, came out killer looking.

Mercury Capri's are undeniably the finest automobiles ever produced in the world.

Get it immediatly!

I liked the look the first time I saw one, and still do.

I have had my 79 5.0 Capri Ghia since 1981, and I still think it is the best car I have ever owned. 265,000 miles worth. It has been retired from being built up much more, and has earned the privilige of being the only car in the family to deserve being garage kept. The 82 Mustang has taken over the hot rod tasking.

Actully I consider my 85 5 speed GT the beginning of the legend as it would blow the doors off the 86 model! but a Black Magic Capri is VERY rare and fast! It was black with gold TRX wheels and gold stripes with the cat emblem.
