Hello. Its getting too darn cold up here in NY and I want to get a remote starter. My car is a 96 gt 5spd. Is there a problem with remote starters and manuals? Think I heard this somewhere but also heard there is one that will work. If so, is it har to put in? Can I do it myself? I have already done pullies, springs and exhaust myself. How hard is it? Where can I get one and how much? Thanks, Dan

Good luck finding a place to do it on a 5spd. This is because there is an ignition switch on the clutch pedal located just under the dash that closes the circuit to the ignitition when the clutch is not engaged. The ignition will not function unless the clutch pedal is depressed, opening the circuit. This is supposed to prevent vehicles from launching at start up and running people over. Granted that is a unique way to rid the gene pool of the Darwin types, but it won't win you any new friends...

I have remote starters in all 3 of my automatic vehicles. The only 5spd I ever had one in was our 93 Dodge Diesel truck. Even that was a backdoor special because the shop was concerned about liabilities etc... if the truck started while left in gear. Which it did, it only ran over a pile of rocks beside the garage, lucky for us.

The shop I use for all my starters won't touch a Stang because of the switch. If you find someone who is really creative, they can get around it, but it will cost $500 or more.

As for my current 5 spd Stang, I too wish for the remote starter but it's not worth the expense when Nitto tires, a new throttle body and plenum take priority.

Good Luck
