How in the $#*& does this stuff come off? I need to have these pieces prepped for my body man by saturday, and don't want to destroy them with a heat gun or adhesive remover in the process. What has worked for you guys?

What I do is get one peeled up and use needle nose pliers. Once you get the end peeld up use the pliers in there and peel it off, like opening a can of Spam. But I am refering to taking off the metal backing also. Then when you get ready to install lay the mouding in the sune to flatten them out ..

3M makes an adhesive remover just for this........any good automotive paint shop will have it.

Yep, called Stripe Off Wheel. Use it at a low speed on a drill. Get the wheel that has the drill adapter. Cost is ~$25.

I used a wheel similar to the one above on my drill to remove the tape from the molding on my Mountaineer when I had to remove / reinstall it. I got the wheel at Sears Hardware and it had "soft" metal bristles going around the outside. It worked well and cost about 5-10 bucks.

NOTE It will scratch a little. I didnt care b/c I was only using it on the underside of the trim molding and then reapplying new 3m tape anyway. It didnt make any holes, gashes, etc, but it did scratch a little.

Good luck.

the eraser wheel will eat the mouldings use the 3m adhesive remover stuff and razor blades for putting it back on 3m urethane window weld works great and isnt gonna go bad like the double sided tape a few years down the road!

Check out my thread that I put together a few months ago. I'm sure it'll help!

Molding Restoration Thread

This is the exact method we used when I painted my car. If you take the metal strip out, it allows the molding to lay flat so it can be sprayed. We used double sided 3M molding tape and haven't had any problems. The best way to go my friend, good write-up!

How? It is not even touching the moulding when you use it to take off the tape residue from the metal backing.

Perhaps you are thinking of something else. I have used this many times and it is the ideal way to get all of the residue off. Then, as mentioned, lay new 3M mounting tape and throw the mouldings back on.

I think they are used for removing decals
Yes, except for lacquer paint. If used properly, it "rolls" the residue from the metal strip much like you would by using your thumb. I've been doing this for years and as long as the moulding was taken off without bending it, the metal strip need not be taken out of the moulding.
