removing cats

alright so i got a 02 gt. i just put the pypes cat back on. love it. didnt fit untill i pulled out the jigsaw haha so after the black bullits, catback, intake, mach 1 grille delete, mgw short throw, and tires im a little broke. i still want it louder but no money for x pipe. if i take the 2 cats off can i still pass inspection in delaware? someone told me i have 4 cats. so if thats so i think i should be good but if not i dont wanna risk it i heard its a hefty fine. any input would be great! thanks

Here in CT, even though they don't use a sniffer on the tail pipe, they'll be able to tell from the smell and they usually look under the car to be sure they're there.

I do believe you have 4 cats with 2 upstream and 2 downstream O2 sensors. I don't think you'll be able to just cut them out. I'd also consider keeping it intact just for the Emissions test month.

Also, it will throw a check engine light unless you install MIL eliminators on the rear 2 O2 sensors.

you dont have 4 cats. youy have two resinators then the two cats...does pretty much the same

No, I'm pretty sure there's 4 cats down there, and a resonator does a totally different job than a cat. The downstream O2s are usually between the front cats and the rears, so removing the rears won't throw a code but may fail a sniff test. I've seen cars pass tests without the rears before, however. If you have the skills and patience, you could hollow out the rear cats and run a pipe through them so it would pass the visual inspection at the very least. Just don't gut a cat and run it like that because it sounds like CRAP!

Yea hes right, you have four cats, and so on and so forth. At the very least, leave your cats alone if you don't have a problem, I have read that its a federal offense now to remove cats. It further states, if they need replacing, you have to have it done where it was originally done at. I mean thats a bit much. Now, at the most, you can get Hiflow-cats and weld them in. The full exhaust will run you 470s to 500s give or take. I'm not doing anything to my exhaust until I can afford the full set up. Does anybody know that if I get long tube headers will I have to get rid of my cats b/c I heard that shortys are not much of an improvment.

yes you have 4 cats, as of right now I do not live in a state that has emission restrictions and I want to pull everything from the fire wall back. get your emission test done and then yank out all of the restrictions. Just keep the cats for when you need to retest.

you can get long tubes with cats, i have them, you will need a shorty mid-pipe to go with your LT's and you can get them with hi-flow cats.

state to state its a different law on inspections, but however catalytic converters were mandated by federal laws to be installed on 1975 and newer vehicles. so i would not recomend removing ALL of them but the states that a vehcle with single outlet exhaust must have 1 cat inline before the muffler, any vehicle with dual outlet exhaust from manifold to rear of vehicle must have 1 on each side inline before the muffler. so you can cut 2 off and leave the other 2, and not get into trouble with the federalys, but check your state laws before hand. P.S. i used to be nc state vehicle safety and emissions inspector, so we had to inforce fedaral and state laws. as a lil side note all federal laws were brought into place by the EPA, so thinks all you enviromental tree huggen fairys.
