Removing ring and pinion

Guys,

The local junkyard here in CA is full of auto Turbo coupes. For those that dont know.. these come with 3.73 gears from the factory. I intend on yanking all of them since it will only cost me 15.00 per set.

Can anyone give me points on removing the ring and pinion? I've helped and seen it done, but never solo.

In reality its not really worth it to remove used gears from cars that are atleast 20 years old and most likely have well over 100k on them.
New gears are cheap enough that most people wont bother with old used ones.

I dont want to sell these for a profit on the site. I'd like to score a good set of gears for my car. If the gears are in great shape -- 15 bucks for 3.73's is a damn good deal and worth looking into.

15 vs 149.99 is still a pretty big enough difference.

It is hard enough to do in the driveway, I couldn't imagin trying to do it in the junkyard lol. Just bring your whole toolbox with you because you are going to need it

Oh yea it will be fun indeed, but if all goes well i'll have some serious gears for a very affordable price. I think my AOD has 2.73 stock is that correct (anyone ??)

Well if someone would be interested in buying a set then i would entertain it but i was looking to keep them local and just distribute them to friends looking to upgrade. I have already disclosed my cost.. would be hard to make a profit lol.

My mustang has rear drum brakes and i have often thought about converting to disc. Anyone think it would be a better idea to yank the entire rear axle that way i could convert to disc and upgrade the gearing ?

Here's a good article on gear R&R, I think the biggest problem your going to have is getting the ring gear off the carrier. The bolts are thread locked in place and the ring gear is fit on there pretty tight. Everything else is pretty easy.

I stacked a bunch of long 1/2" extensions together and pushed through the carrier cross pin hole as leverage against breaking those ring gear bolts loose. I think breaking the pinion nut loose would be the hard part in the junk yard. Get a long breaker bar and pipe.
