Replacing AC cmprssr clutch assm...purge system?

I'm going to replace the AC Compressor clutch assembly with the compressor still on the car. Do I need to purge the system? I haven't researched the job yet so I dunno how that thing comes apart or what is behind it... I just don't want anything blowing out in my face.
