i have a 1993 mustang gt, i am planning on replacing the upper manifold gasket this weekend, because i see about 3 inches of it sucked back into the intake, and believe this is the cause of my high idle problem. if anyone has done this job, please inform me of the best possible ways to replace the gasket. the car is completely stock and i havent done a manifold gasket fix yet, so any information is very helpful. im very thankful for any help i may recieve.

After disconnecting the negative battery cable, begin the intake swap by disconnecting the throttle inlet tube and all the intake's sensor connectors and vacuum hoses. If you think you'll have a problem hooking everything back up later, use tape to mark where these items are connected.

Don't forget the throttle cable (it's a common mistake). Remove the two 10mm bolts now; otherwise it will be difficult to free them with the upper plenum loosely sliding around. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pop the linkage free of the throttle body.

Six bolts hold the upper plenum to the lower--two in the front, two in the rear, and two under the removable plenum nameplate. If your intake has never been removed, there is a small bracket on the driver-side rear of the manifold that needs to come off.

With the six bolts removed, the upper plenum should easily give way with a simple bump of the hand. It can then be lifted off the lower plenum. Go slowly in case you've missed a connection or hose. It's good to have a helper at this point so you don't have to set the manifold down.

An upper intake manifold gasket? Just unbolt the 6 bolts holding it to the lower, and loosen the hose clamp that holds the air inlet tube to the mass air meter. Then you can just lift the upper intake up and swap the gaskets. It'll take you 10 minutes if you've never done it before..

EDIT: if you find that your original gasket is stuck to either intake surface, you will have to follow the instructions above and remove the upper completely. When I put the spacer on my stock intake the original gasket just slid right out, but your mileage may vary.

Be sure to clean the gasket surfaces well before putting on the new gasket. Also it is a good idea to tape off the open intake ports so nothing falls into the engine.

Then reverse the order to put it back on.

It's not too hard.

Good Luck!
