replacing your fuel filter?

hey i went and got a new fuel filter today and i plan on changing it this weekend. the parts guy asked if i had the right tools and my responce was yes. but i started thinking after i left and i wasnt sure anymore. i replaced one a long time ago on my 1999 expo. but does our fuel filter need a special tool to remove it???

its a 2004 GT

Yes. The regular Ford fuel line disconnect tool.

I just replaced my fuel filter with a Wix and it came with new clips...The clips have been the same used since the fox body stangs. I just cut the old clips off and popped the new ones in with the new filter.

Get a ford fuel line disconnect tool. You can get them in a 2 pc. set with a AC line disconnect tool also for about $12 at napa. I am sure b/c i work there. LOL

good luck. My tank side connecter wount come out - Who ever changed it in the past must yanked it out with out proper tool. And bent the tab to 5hit. I had to cut the darn thing off....

here's a good how-to link. the "tool" he has in that pic can be picked up at advanced auto, but opted for the other type. it was $10 but it seemed easier to use. just make sure you get the 5/16"

The clips are only a "back up" to the fuel line mechanism that locks into place. You need the tool and you can buy the cheap ones at a parts store. Be sure to push the removal tool all the way in to release the internal lock. You don't want to damage your fuel lines. That's dangerous if you do.

Yep. Sounds pretty advanced, or RETARDED to me.
All that pressure should ABSOLUTELY require a special tool.
I still like the old days filters. Spending extra cash just to be able to change... WHAT? A fuel filter?

Love to see what they pull off with the next Air filter system.

It's all pretty simple. Gas coming in, filtration, and gas moving on to it's destination.

Why the special tools?

Simple, overpayed scientific goobers who can't build a fast enough car, so they lean to "specialized tools" to change the simple parts.

Damn, I feel like I'm driving a porsche already!

i hate these quick disconnect fittings. I think I damaged the fitting and now is leaking when replacing the fuel filter because my gas milelage got worse. Yes I did use the special tool.

Actually it's more like a history of morons working on their cars that did not reconnect fuel lines correctly and bbq'ed themselves.... ya think? :Teh-Win:

OMG people, the special tool is a freakin piece of plastic - I paid less than $2.00 for one at Advanced Auto Parts. It takes longer to jack the rear up and slide a pair of stands underneath it than the entire time swapping the actual fuel filter itself.

You are probably right! They gotta make this stuff like our government makes laws...for the lowest common denominator (The idiots who dumps gasoline all over himself, then lights a cigarette, catches himself on fire and sues the gas company, and the automobile, fuel filter, lighter and cigarette manufacturers - and then wins millions!?!? ). And as our society continues to spiral downward because of the greedy, self righteous "the world owes me", "I'm worth more money than they are paying me" and "everything costs too much" thinking, just remember how we got here.

release the pressure in the fuel line before disconnecting..it will give a serious squirt. I watched my mechanic get a gas bath as the fuel filter was removed.

lol, a gas bath. well sounds like i got what i need, thanks for the info guys. wish me luck and i hope that my parts show up before sunday so i can get this done. other wise i'll have to wait till next sunday when i get more time off...ehhw **sigh**

You definitely don't want a squirt in the eye. Even with the pressure released that can happen. Wear safety googles for stuff like this and anytime you are working under the car looking up.
