I was wondering if anyone has tried one of these reproduction headliners with the ABS plastic backing like they sell from 5.0 Resto? They seem like a good idea but I was just wondering how they fit. Thanks in advance!

I installed one on my 92 GT. I went this route, because I had when I purchased the car it had an after market sun roof installed that had been leaking for who knows how long with being fixed, and the backing board was ruined. The cover job was the same quality you would get anywhere. Besides the abvious of cuting the hole for the sunroof, the backing board was molded about 1" to long in all directions. I had to test fit repeatedly, and cut the board to fit. After I had it trimmed approptiatly, it fit pretty well and looked much better than my old torn up board.

I'm curious about the repro units as well. My headliner is sagging and I am considering switching over to black (from gray) if the quality of these is good. Looks like a pretty straightforward project that takes a little muscle.

I wouldn't recommend buying this to anyone that has a usable backing board though. You can get a board recovered at any upholstery shop (a common practice) for about a third of what this will cost.

Yes they're pretty easy. Just make sure you scrape or sand off all the old foam backing thats stuck on the stock cardboard backer. I bought my color matched material right from 5.0 Resto and it matches nicely and was fairly cheap and its real good quality material also.

Guys be careful of the adhesive you use. Make sure the stuff you get is for high temp (think of all those hot days your car sits in the sun with windows up).

3M sells a line of spray adhesive which they advertise as:

3M Headliner Spray Adhesive is specially formulated for fast tack and high heat resistance. Fast tack holds the headliner in place for easy assembly. The bond holds under the heat of the summer sun on the roof.

You can get the spray adheasive at any craft store..

didnt want to have to make a new thread so im kindof stealing this one..

Nope that is correct.

Sunroof and t-top cars get vinyl roofs and visors. Solid roof cars get cloth visors and roof.
