Reproduction Steering Wheel Fit

I have a small issue with the steering wheel fit on my 65. This is a new unit from CJ's it's perfect, except that I cant close the gap between the column sleeve and the very bottom of the wheel. This is preventing my horn from working. The original fits fine. The wheel is on tight. the only thing I can think of is to somehow enlarge the hole on the wheel hub to allow it to move inward a bit more, but this is a tappered hole.

I'd return it but it was purchased almost two years ago before the restoration was completed.


any ideas?

Try loosening the mount bolts under the dash and sliding the columns outer housing closer to the wheel. I have read where there is a bit of play there to make use of........

I have a repro steering wheel on my 65 and we didn't have any issues.

You need to adjust the steering column. It is intended to be. Where the column meets the dash, there is a U clamp. Loosen the nut on each side, and slide the column toward the wheel until the gap is 1/8"-1/16", and you should be fine.

How is moving the column going to fix his horn issues?

He is complaining the column isn't close enough to the steering wheel to operate the horn. This is a common problem with stock original wheels, which is why Ford provided this adjustment. Just loosen the nuts and pull the column closer to the wheel. Fixing this problem takes less time than entering this information onto this forum. Trust me. I've adjusted dozens of these.
