Retard/Advance TFS stage 1 cam ??'s

I'm about to do my second top end rebuild and was wondering if I could advance or retard my TFS cam by simply putting the timing chain assembly on in a different position. The timing chain assembly has 3 slots for dot-to-dot, 4* advance, and 4* retarded. If this is possilble, would either advancing it or retarding it be better. I know it moves the power band but I need HELP.

i did mine 4* advance. not sure if its helping or hurting but it runs great

I think advancing moves the powerband down, but please double-check that. We can't really say what's better, because that depends on your engine and your car's use. Personally, I like a low powerband since my car is mainly street driven. Post the engine specs and the car specs and you'll be able to get better opinions.

dragnazz 5.0: What kind of quarter times are you getting? Sounds like a nice setup.

advance would give u move bottom end and less top end. and retard would reverse this.

dragnazz 5.0: What kind of quarter times are you getting? Sounds like a nice setup.

i havent been to the track yet...i just got the car running good so track times will be coming soon. but will be 1/8th since thats all we have around here

Although you probably already know this, keep in mind that if your p/v clearance is tight advancing will make it worse. I was looking at the TF stage 2 with my engine build, but TF said I might have to retard it if p/v was too close. Just something to think about.

Well my car has street and a little strip duty. It's a stock bottom end 302 with ported TW's, Track heat intake, and stage 1 cam. So does putting the timing chain on in a different position advance or retard it?? Since I race on the weekends, I don't want to lose any top end. I've heard the stage 1 lacks a little bottom end but I think my 4.10's will take care of that.

Slap that sucker in dot to dot man. You'll makes TONS of low end torque with what you have, not to mention the gears. Hell, I would consider retarding 4* if I were you.

FWIW I run the cam dot to dot (on a 108 ICL) with Edelbrock heads(ported) and a RPM intake. Cars makes 340 lb/ft of torque. Makes over 300 from 3000 (dyno pull started) all the way to 6000 (let off).

Thanks for all the help fellas, but I have one more question to ask you. Although this is the second top end rebuild, it's the first cam I'm putting in. I'm not sure if it will help in the long run, but I'm going to find TDC before I even tear it down. Now my question is, will the cam only go in in one position??
