Well one of my buddies is a factory stock racer, and says that I would gain a little bit from retarding it, so I did it today, I have a comp cams chain on it and put it on the -4 mark on the crank and it did nothing but smoke out the air filter, so I put it 180 out and did nothing, cars dead, nothing..

what could have happened?

not really a big deal, I got another chain to put on there tomorrow, just seeing if I could make this work...

Retarding it from what set point?...... was it +4°, +5°, +6° set initially?..... are you looking for a split overlap setting?......

My point is, how can you (or your buddy) estimate a possible gain, if the initial set point position is unknown?

You can run it at -4 and it will pick up a little top end. I did that to mine when I had the stock cam. I have no idea of what you could have done wrong. The dot on the upper gear was pointing down and the dot on the lower gear was pointing up correct? In other words it was dot to dot?
