i have a 91 coupe. my throttle stuck open a couple times and i posted a thread wondering what kinda of damage it did. people said that mustangs have a factory rev limiter. i dont think so myself, but if anyone could let me know that'd be awesome.

gofast_beloud,

Yes, it has a built-in rev limiter in the PCM (PIP based) it is either at 6250 or 6500 RPM, depending on whom you believe. It is pretty nasty sounding when you hit it, I have and didn't like it (thought I blew my motor) so I implemented a half fuel rev limiter in my Tweecer RT tune to soften the limiter effect, it just cuts fuel to half the cylinders and is way better than using the PIP rev limiter.

yep. everything i have read (i am not as savvy as Don) says 6250. i would note that many a factory tach is off, so you can see an indicated 7K RPM or over before you might actually splatter against the limiter.
I am envious of Don's TwEECer (Don, my 94 could REALLY use you. ), but you can also run an aftermarket ignition and set it to cut spark around 6K (better to lose spark than fuel).

good luck.

The factory limiter, like stated above, is 6250. The only way to get rid of it is get a chip for the computer. With the throttle getting stuck that is where it was bouncing. It isn't good for your engine to do that but you probably didn't do any major damage either.

The rev limiter is there to PREVENT engine damage. If the motor is in good shape then you wont hurt it. Every car from Ford, GM, chrysler, to ***. and German all have rev limiters.

i know i would not want to be running at WOT and have the puter start shutting down fuel to various cylinders. the limiter is to prevent parts from flying out of the motor, IMHO. a much better way to PREVENT engine damage is a spark limiter.

Actually the factory limiter is much easier on the engine. It shuts the fuel completely OFF: No misfires, no raw fuel dumped in the exhaust or on the hot exhaust valves, no backfires, no lean cylinders either. The fuel is not lean, it is off - big difference.

Not like I do it often, but over the past 15 years I've probably hit the limiter a dozen times or two with no damage.
