revelation! could this cause me to overheat?

Ok well whiel under the hood i realized my belt tensioner arrow is pointing pas normal. In other words, my belt most likely stretched and needs replacing. NOW, could this cause my overheating at idle? i noticed once the engine hits like 200-205, it levels off and cools lower when i drive. Could a worn belt have some weakening affect on the fan and not aloow it to cool at 180?

You'd probably hear belt squeal if the waterpump were silpping.

Did the belt seem really loose? Unless the belt was very loose, I would think it would still turn the water pump and fan at idle, since it doesn't take a lot of force to turn. How is your alternator output at idle? I think if the belt was loose enough not to turn the fan, that it would also not turn the alternator well.

Do you have underdrive pullys? If so, that could cause the fan and water pump to be turning too slowly to cool at idle.

Hmm, I dont think the belt could slip at idle but then be dandy at higher RPM.

Hi Fox Racer , say what kind of fan setup do you have? If you have the stock fan and fan clutch. Is the clutch possibly worn out?

wats up hink, we went through a check list already. just to recap: I replaced water pump with higher flow unit, new heads, new thermostat, VERY stiff fan clutch, new intake, new 3 row radiator (brass), flushed numerous times, since ive owned the car, the coolant never looked brown or gunked, block passages are clear, headgaskets are on corectly.

Thanks for the idea. I do have an underdrive crank waterpump pulley. should i change both, or one of them?

Hmm , what size is your water pump pulley versus the old stock one ? Bigger , smaller?

It sounds like your cooling system is in good shape. You said new thermostat, was it doing the same thing before the new thermostat?

If you have the stock crank and water pump pullys, I would probably swap them both on, that would let you know pretty quick if that's your problem.
