reverse rotation water pump

Ok. First off I want to ask if my car is suppose to have a reverse rotation water pump or not? I have a 92 LX HO 5.0. I was always under the impression that all the HO's were reverse rotation water pump. Second, what exactly is a reverse rotation water pump? I know the pulley turns the opposite direction from every other pulley on the motor and that the coolant flows in reverse but does it flow through the heads then through the block or does it flow through the block and then through the heads? I am having some weird cooling issues with my car and if I better understand how the cooling system works it will help me to diagnose it. Thanks

Yes your car should have a reverse rotation water pump.

Basically all it means is that the pump is driven counterclockwise instead of clockwise. The impeller is designed to be spun counterclockwise but i think that the water flow through the block is that same as a standard 302 its just the design of the pump is different. I think that the reason for the reverse rotation is because of how the serpentine belt set works on the 5.0 engine

It just means that you belt is routed from the other side of the pulley than a standard 302 making the water pump pulley turn the opposite direction.

So if a standard rotation water pump was on the car and was being turned the opposite direction like a reverse rotation what would happen?

Also is there any way by looking at the water pump you can tell if its standard or reverse rotation water pump?

Hello tording,

you can only see it from behind the pump. Look the picture
of mine reverse (counterclockwise) rotating pump.
The impeller it the only different part.

word of advice, if you ever want a new pump dont buy a high-flow pump from CJ Pony parts, they are junk. didnt even have it on the car 3 hours and the shaft started to rub on the backing plate. tried to send it back but there is no warranty on it. plus it wasnt new like they said, it was a rebuilt job. 60 bucks down the drain.
