Rewiring my 69-suggestions welcome

After 37 years and many after market additions of gauges and sound systems, my current wiring harness' are dry cracked and tape spliced and need to be completly replaced.
After searching and finding all the required harnesses (a new dash harness is the hardest to locate for a 69, equal to finding Big Foot) the dollar meter is fast closing in to $1,000.
I did find an alternative at "Ron Francis wiring" in kit form including the new fuse block, wire and instructions, you run each wire individually and bundle the harness and splice existing connectors that are not included in the kit and are hard to replace. Cost is much more reasonable at $400
Has anyone used this kit and could comment or offer other options and experiences, I would hate to spend all my effort and money rebuilding a car only to lose it to a wiring fire.

I hadn't heard of that one. I used a generic 21 ckt wiring harness from EZ wiring. It was a lot of work but anyone can do it. It just requires lots of planing, a multimeter, and time. You should be able to search for more posts on it.

I second jikelly's recommendation. I'm using the EZ 21 in my 66 Mustang. I'm impressed with the quality of the generic wiring harness and of course the price. You can read more about my wiring experience here.

Thanks for the tip on E-Z wiring, this looks very similiar to the "Ron Francis wiring" web site that I found, I assume you need to reuse existing end connecters, how are the instructions and tech support if you needed it or did you just follow a factory Mustang wiring diagram.

Every wire in the EZ wiring harness has a label printed on the insulation at 6" intervals. I used the 1966 Mustang wiring diagram to sort out the wiring connections between old and new. I believe I reused two connectors. The one to the windshield wiper motor and the one to the headlight switch. I should also point out that I elected to go with 30 amp relays for headlights, using the existing wiring harness lighting circuits for relay control of high and low beam headlights.

Welcome to the world of 69 ownership!

When I had the Mach, it had had an electrical melt-down, I ended up repairing the harnesses.

Now, if you can find the "Hockey Sticks" for a 69 Vert, THAT is the holy grail for 69 'Stangs.

painless wiring is working on a kit for 69/70 cars. the part number is 20122 and should be released later this year. if you're not in a hurry the painless harness will probably be the best way to go. give their tech line a call and ask what the expected due date is, 1-800-423-9696

I called Painless and they said they need 9 months to a year before they come out with this harness.

wow, last time i talked to them about that harness they were hoping to have it by mid-summer or so. bummer. i think i did read something a while back about them having trouble finding some of the connectors for they needed for the stock 69 mustang parts like for the instrument cluster and the little 90 degree push plugs and stuff like that.

Hey, I had a 70 that was cut off at the firewall. Everything under the hood I got from NPD and it was only about $100. The underdash I got off Ebay. Had to fight a couple times but finaly got one for ~ $130. They pop up rather frequently I think. The only other thing I can think of is be ready to get some aftermarket gauges. Only my fuel gauge works.

It is a real bummer. I just called them about a month ago an asked about a harness for my 69 and they said they didn't have one. When I saw your post I called right away and they said at least 9 months. Not sure I can wait that long. I think I'm going with an EZ harness.

Looks like the wiring kit from EZ is the way to go and waiting 9 months for Painless wirning is out of the question. "unrealmach1" are you also rewiring your entire car, I would like to know how you make out, please keep me posted.
Where can I get replacement bolt in stock gauges, I have only been able to find digital instrument clusters and that just doesn't work for me.

Yeah, I am going to do the whole car too. It will be awhile before I start on mine because I have a guy that is going to do paint and body on it pretty soon. I have decided to wait and wire it after I get it back. Mustang Monthly or Mustang and Fords just did an article on 69-70 gauges and where to get them reconditioned. I also hate the digital look in the 69-70 cars. To each his own but its not my style. I was looking at Haneline or the new Year one dash insert. I don't really love the Haneline gauges, but the Year One insert only comes in black right now and I have the woodgrain dash. I am thinking I will use the Year One insert with Autometer Designer Black gauges and buy a clock delete panel and just use woodgrian on the doors??

"unrealmach1" sounds like we are at about the same point, I have replaced all the necessary rotted metal; floor pans, doors, tail light panel, hood, trunk cross beam, rear lid, and qtr panel. Holy crap when I write it down it sounds like a real basket case but all the right parts were solid to start with, anyway that is done and the body is now in the shop for final prep and paint.
When I get it back I will also start all the wiring and everything else, I just don't know if any of the gauges are working because I never drove the car farther than into the garage from the delivery carrier.
Refreshing the gauges sounds like a good idea and will keep the look original. I have freshened up the cluster with a new coat of paint and new lenses and wanted to replace the instrument voltgage regulator while I had it out, but I have been told that the company making these units are out of production and they are not accepting back orders, comments anyone?
