Hello everybody,

I was wondering if you fellas could help me out with this one. Some specs:

'66 Coupe 289-4V (all original, except carb)

First off, my carb is running really rich and gives off a black soot from the exhaust, but the really strange thing is that my left pipe gives off a lot more soot than the right pipe. What gives? I can't figure that out for the life of me. The exhaust was ancient so I decided to go ahead and have new pipes installed (with H pipe) and see if that remedied the situation. Nope! Still smokes bad from the left side except much louder with Flowmaster 40s.

Anyway, I am not sure how to proceed. Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

is it fuel rich (burns your eyes when you are behind the car) or "oil" rich? if it is oil, i would suspect a bad intake gasket sucking oil into the intake from the valley. (ask my how i know about that one!)

Yes, it is fuel rich. Since this is an original motor (except for the recent carb change) I assume that it might just need a valve job. I just wanted to tap your brains before I start making assumptions.

There are a lot of reasons this could be happening. I doubt it's a valve problem. Have you done a wet and dry compression test?
Has this car ever run correctly while you've owned it?
Did the problem occur after installing the Carburetor?
Have you made any other changes that may have caused this? Tuneup, plug wires, etc?
Have you checked for vacuum leaks (most likely on the right bank)?
Is your PCV and valve cover breather plumbed, and working correctly?
Is the rich smell only at idle?
If you have a power brake booster, can you hear a hiss at the booster?

That's a lot of questions, but if you can answer all of those, it will assist in pointing you in the correct troubleshooting path.

A few of these I need to check out for the answer. I will write back soon since tomorrow is Christmas and everything. Thanks for your help though!
