Hey Everyone!

I am rebuilding a block, and I'd like to hear your opinion on what brand of rings i should get?

Basically here's my engine so far:
10:1 flat top pistons 30 over
Small chamber heads, ported (about 63cc)
1.94" intake and 1.6" exhaust valves
roller rockers, comp cam 280deg.

well thats the project so far, i have an intake from a 83 mustang, which is about 600 cfm, but I think i may go street avenger for better flow and single plane. I have a holley 600 cfm for the top.

this is gona be fun!
any ring brands you guys like the best?

Whaaaat?! I think you have alot more to worry about if you are serious on building a motor, not some f*** rings. I think Ive heard it all.

Dont wanna be rude tho, sorry if I sound that way.

Ummm, rings are an important component. Bad rings, your going no where.

I have heard that the Total Seal gapless series are pretty good, the "race" one's will wear fast but the street series will last you a while. The whole reason my engine is being rebuilt is because of bad ring seal. I will probally go with the total seal rings, suposed to have 1% or less leakdown, which is a hell of a lot better than the 30-50% my motor had.

Total seal gapless. They're pricy but well worth it. I paid like $250 for mine. Don't get the file to fit ****. It will take you all day to file those SOB's. Especially if your building a nitrous motor.

I like good old moly coated Speed Pros - file fit. That's all I'll use. I've thought about trying the Total seals in the past but I've talked to too many that had nothing but problems with the gapless.

The only thing about molly rings is that they are designed for high debris applications such as hummers (not the civilian ones) and farm diesel equipment.

I am probally going with gapless Total Seals on mine. What's the point of high flow heads, and intakes when your just going to loose a large percentage right by the rings.

Just because they're gapless doesn't mean you aren't going to get blowby. I've talked to fellow racers at the track who have tried the gapless rings in several different motors and lost horsepower on the Dyno and had oil consumption problems. If the second ring gap is not just right it'll cause the top ring to flutter due to trapped combustion pressure between the top and 2nd ring. So yep, they looked awesome in a leak down test but didn't put up the numbers. For as many guys I know that have used them probably half liked them and half won't use them again so I've never took the chance on them. I just run the Speedpros with a straight tight gap. My engine may not put up awesome leakdown numbers like the gapless would, but it puts up the horsepower numbers and doesn't burn oil.

Speedpro, moly coated, or use the recommendation of the piston manufacturer.

I have used two sets of these, one now has 95,000 miles, well over a hundred passes and a 100 shot and seems fine. I did use pre fit ones both times, seems to work.

I think the chrome faced rings are the ones primarily intended for the industrial applications, not moly. The moly function is to improve oil retention. The chrome is more resistant to damage from abrasive particle ingestation.
