I'm going to start off with the countless hours I've spent reading straight through, all of it. About midway through I didn't expect to finish reading to find no paint yet. Along the way I have to add was pure entertainment. Went from a sad teary story to a amazing cobra, that's not even done. Seeing all the picture of other projects and your other mustangs and fabricating parts like it's nothing. Not to mention taking the time to make parts and do projects for others in the midst of working on your own

(Sorry phone can't cooperate) everything you do that you've posted appears to be done to the best of your abilities. Which may I add is better then anything I've seen done. I respect your abilities and your patience to get everything right and perfect. Not many can do it. I will definatly be keeping my eyes on your thread to keep up with your talents, and now at almost 2am I can run to the store and not'miss catching up from years ago' when you started this thread. 2 big thumbs up with ask your projects and mustangs and work

Someone just pointed to this thread as a good resource for info on repairing plastic pieces. Well, after spending HOURS reading through this entire thread, I am absolutely hooked, and this thread has reignited my passion for Mustangs. I was seriously debating on getting rid of my 87 GT but now I am debating jumping into some projects I never got to over the years. Just awesome beautiful work in here. Absolutely amazing!

Yep - I've owned it for 12-13 years or so. My signature is no longer linking to pics for some reason, so I just threw in a URL for now.

Anyway - I have some plastic hatch panels I need to repair, so I'm going to try and follow 95steedamustang's instructions and see what happens! Worse case is I sand them back down again and start over.

@Aaron...yes...I love t-tops. And yes those panels can be repaired and I have even gotten where I can replicate the factory texture. Just did this on my 89 Saleen project. Hit me up with any questions once you start it.
Here is a spot that was cracked, repaired retuxtured and the finished pieces.

Ok, I'm interested,...where's the part where you talk about what you did to repair the crack(s), what you used, and how you duplicated the factory texture?

I'm also curious (because you are obviously a brilliant body/paint man) what you do to weld in a patch and how you keep the warpage under control. I dread that I have so much sheet metal welding in front of me on my project, and any advice would be great.

I use Fasco 2 part epoxy mixed 1:1 to repair a crack or split. Sanding the backside with 80 grit so it will bite. Small scratches I will just use some glazing putty to fill then sand smooth (320 grit works great here). Then I will use some pieces Ive cut out from bad panels that are textured and as the epoxy starts to tack up...I will just stick it on there and imprint the epoxy so it will set to match. I use SEM texture spray on the small little places and then just sand and recoat as needed to match it perfectly.

I always fight warpage especially with the newer cars but now I will Tig my patch panels very very slowly....usually 5-10 seconds at a time and let cool. I have a big welder but actually found a small Miller seems to do the best with sheet metal. In fact even when I would mig weld everything, I found a Hobart 185 to be the best at that. In fact I still use that on engine bays. I still get a little, but I can block that out.

The Mach 1 Paint phase is officially complete. Next year will be engine details, upgrades etc. But for now...its just drive and enjoy.

Lol! Nope...I only drive a truck daily. I haven't daily driven a mustang in 10 years. That Mach 1 has only got 3900 miles so I doubt it's ever been a driver.
