Rocker arm installation

Just wondering how I should be tightening the rockers on my new motor. Its an 88 5.0 HO. I have the correct sequence for tightening them but the haynes manual says there should be 0.123" clearance between the rocker arm and the valve stem an TDC after the compression stroke on #1. To me that seems like a lot. Any help would be appreciated.

That is a lot. That's for lifter preload. When you bolt the rocker down grab it and push down on the pushrod side, the plunger in the lifter will leak down. Then measure your clearance. I had to get a shim kit for mine as mine were putting the plunger almost all the way down and I had only about .050-.060 clearance. I torqued them to 20 ft-lbs. Haynes calls for 18-24 I believe. Hope this helps.
