My car developed a loud ticking noise under the #4 cylinder after rodding around last weekend. It was bad enough that I took it to a shop to have them look at it.

They said to fix the problem they would have to install a kit that basically consisted of longer push rods for $150 plus 2-3 hours labor. They didn't pull the cover to see what the problem was for sure. I told they I would think about it and let them know.

So I'm going to pull the cover and see what is going on. I figure for $150+ I can put some roller rockers and new push rods in and maybe new lifters also.

There are my questions, first I can get 1.6 FMS rockers for $100 from a friend, will they fit under the stock valve covers or do I need Fox valve covers. If I need Fox covers will a stock gasket work or do I need a thicker ones.

Next, should I replace the push rods to? They are not that expensive and think it would be arought to do so.

Next, should I replace the lifters while I'm at it. A bad lifter maybe causing the problem anyway. If I do change lifters a new e303 and timing chain are going in to.

Tell me what you think, any help would be great.

Roy...hows things...got any new plaques painted up???....

Anyway...cant answer your one the VC clearance thing...

I would pull the VCs and check around, maybe something just loosened up...the longer PR thing seems kinda wack to me ???? Never heard that one before...especially on a stock motor???

How many miles on the motor?? Ford roller lifters are pretty bullet proof, i quess i could be a collapsed lifter, but it would be odd....Loosen up the noisy cylinder and check the ends of the PRs on both ends,,,are they mushroomed or damaged in any way...that would be a tell tale sign somethings gone South in the cylinder...

For the money if your in there, sure you can replace the lifters and PRs for reasonable money..

Hope that helps some...

Longer push rods is not the answer on a stock motor. Sounds like the shop was looking for some easy money. Could be a couple things a collapsed lifter, a loose rocker arm, something bent or broken, or maybe even a bad exhaust gasket. I would check everything out before I went out and spent any money.
The fms 1.6 will fit with some massaging. The valve cover might need to be made larger with a ball hammer, you might need to shave off the corner of some of the rockers to let the clear, or even doubling up on the valve cover gaskets might help. I have seen them fit under the sn-95 valve cover it just took some extra work. And the gaskets should be the same.
