Roll axle backwards 2in on leaf springs?

My uncle wants to make extra space in his wheel wells for larger wheels in his 64 Falcon that he just V8ed. What is the best way to move the rear end assembly back 2 inches on his leaf springs? Can he just cut the pins off and move them back? He is using a 289 T10 custom d/s 8.5 rear from a 63 (2in shorter) on a cherry stock 64 Falcon which had a 97hp straight 6. This is the only thing that is holding him up from driving it. Please Help!

It's not quite that easy. You'll have to him the rear once it's back to get the pinion angle back to the correct angle, and make a longer driveshaft. But possible. Maybe a different body to rear brake line as well, that's longer.

The centering pin will be a problem. You could definately drill a hole in the leafpack for a new pin, but I'd be worried the leafs would crack/break at the old pin's location.

Like 10secgoal mentions you'd also have to shim the axle, get a longer driveshaft, and possibly replace brake hydrolic line and parking brake cables. Shock angles, length, and mounting locations might also be a concern.

It's more likely the springs would crack at the drilled hole than the old hole. You're playing with fire here in drilling holes in springs and taking your life in your hands. He needs to come up with a better,safer solution.

Move the spring mounts 2" back.

drill the perches in the axle longer so they reengage the pins in the leaves/ not quite 2" but I dunno why you would do it in the first place?

Because the 64 Falcon puts the stock tire very close to the front edge of the opening on the quarter panel. Putting on larger diamer tires will either require sheetmetal surgery to enlarge the wheel opening, or relocating the axle backwards. Try calling Calvert Racing - they make split monoleaf steel leaf springs - and can probably set up a set to move the centering pin.

Eaton Detroit Spring will make custom springs packs pretty much anyway you want them, they made the original springs for Ford for many years, and I think they still do too.

I've seen gassers at the car shows which change the leaf spring mounting points rearward to fit bigger tires.
