Roll bar and NHRA question

I have been thinking about getting a 6 point roll bar for my notchback and I have a question about the harness bar behind the seat.

I am pretty tall and leg space is at a premium in these cars, so what I wanted to do is cut out the bar that comes welded in and modify it so my seat can go farther back (only 2-3"). I imagine the best way to do this is to weld in a couple pieces of pipe, pointing maybe 45 degress back, shortening the original bar, and then welding it back in place.

Bascially, i'm wondering if the harness bar has to run straight across the car to be NHRA/IHRA legal for a car running in the 10.00-11.49 range. The car isn't that fast right now, but when the time comes for a blower to be thrown on, I don't want to have to worry about it.

Thanks

You can place the main hoop at any point in the car. It just has to be in relation to your seating position. If you want to sit all the way back, put the hoop farther back. If you do need the bar to go beyond the main hoop, you should bend it, not cut it.

It sounds like you are pretty good at welding if you are even thinking of doing this. Making our own cae is definitely the cheaper way to do it. I thik if you get the NHRA rulebook (or download th PDF from them) they have the rules on that sort of thing. Regulation for geometry, welds, and what not.
