Roll bar and subframe connectors

This winter Iam going to be putting a 6 point bar in my '89 hatch and would like to replace my subframe connectors with full lengths. While doing this I was hoping to tie the SFC to the cage. I have heard many times of people doing this but havent really seen any pictures of it. How exactly is this done? If the SFC lines up with the bottom plate(under the car) do you just sandwich the SFC between the plate and the floor and weld it together or? I was looking into kits that are already welded together and you just weld the mounting plates in, is this the way to go? I myself can MIG weld, not TIG but if needed can possibly get it TIG welded.

i was under the impression that the hoop bar came through the floor and was welded to the subframe connector. catch me?

i believe I have only seen this tie-in with through-floor subframes. Most guys will place in a kicker section that will run from the main hoop mounting point over to the subframe at maybe a 45 degree or so angle. This gives a nice solid place for the hoop to mount, acheiving two things....in the event that the car actually rolls, the hoop doesn't just punch through or tear the floor, and it adds additional rigidity.

I will try to get some pics up. How we do this is cut the section of floor out directly above SFC that will allow the SFC to mount flush under car and level with the F/R subframe sections. Then when you install your cage you weld 1x3 rec. tubing off of SFC to floor where hoop meets and tie your kicker bars into SFC as well. Then weld a piece of 1x3 rec. inbetween strut mounts in rear and tie you back overhead bars to that. If you dont have access to a frame jig, use 4 car ramps and leave car street weight if possible this will keep fairly level and loaded.

My brother mad my roll bar...custom 4 point. Every joint on the bars themselves are TIG'd...but the plates that mount the main hoop and rear struts are MIG'd. All the mounting plates are 6 x 6 x .125" cold rolled stock.

That is really good looking. Maybe I better just cut the floor then I was really trying to avoid it....Does the sfc affect the seats at all?

just from visual inspection i cant see an issue with the seats....however ure gonna have to do something custom with your carpet. they sell real light weight stuff (carpet) that isnt "preformed". My brother has in his coupe drag car and i think it looks really good. Thats the only problem i can see with it.

Thats what I thought at first but for some reason to me it looks like the sfc would end up hitting the bottom backside of the seat.

you are right. i dont know what the clearances are. it looks like he has a stock seat setup. I guess if you were to go that route you would have to make sure that the subframe doesnt come up to high.

does anyone know if the bolt in kits from competition engineering is NHRA legal. those plates that sandwhich the floor pan inbetween 3/16 plates and are somthing like 6inches by 6inches?

They must be legal because thats what all the other bolt in cages do. Wouldnt be a bad idea to weld them in place though.

as long as the 6x6 plates have 4 grade 8 bolts sammichn' em' you are legit. I use stock carpet all depends how high you bring em up through the floor.
