My 67 cougar was in storage for 9 months during the winter time (while i was away at school). I drove it home from the storage place a few weeks ago, and have driven it around the block a few times since then. Today, i drove it to work (about a 15 mile roundtrip drive). It ran absolutely horribly. Its got fresh 91 octane gas in it, but it seems like the carb is just dumping fuel...i used about a quarter tank of gas, Its smoking quite a bit (gray, gasoline burning smoke), and its making a popping sound when i accelerate (it never was fast, but its like a slug now). Tried messing with the idle fuel mixture screws at work...didn't change much. Any ideas? Could this just be because it hasn't been driven in a while? The car has a holley 4 barrel 600CFM carb (probably is too big for the 289) Any help/advice/suggestions are appreciated...i'd like to get it figured out so I can drive it around town this weekend without making everyone wheeze with exhaust

thanks

When you say "it seems like the carb is just dumping fuel" could mean one or both of the floats are sticking to the bottom of the bowl causing extra fuel to come in. My friends Holley sticks if it sits for more than a month. You can try banging the fuel bowls with your hand or lightly with a hammer. Also I would get a can of carb cleaner and spray it in the carb while it's running. Make sure you spray some in the two vents, this will but the cleaner in the bowls and cycle it through the carb. If I were you I'd rebuild the carb if it had been sitting that long, I've never had good luck with carbs sitting.
